| | What does Esperanza do? We started as an affordable housing developer with the understanding that housing needs was just the first of many, low-income families face. Other needs addressed in the four program areas are community health, economic development, arts and science enrichment and education and outreach.
Do you only do housing? No, we have five program areas. We preserve and maintain 165 homes to tenants in our developments. We also continue to meet our housing mission through participation and leadership in the affordable housing movement such as the Figueroa Corridor Community Land Trust, Right to the City, Housing LA and other coalition work that defends the basic right to have access to safe and affordable housing.
What is a promotora? A promotora is community health promoter who has been trained in a six month-long comprehensive community health curriculum to draw on indigenous skills to develop a cadre of community health leaders. After the training, promotoras may engage in a six month internship and/or find employment in the health field.
What do promotoras do? Promotoras provide access and advocacy within a community to a huge range of vital health education and services. They are central to model strategies such as Better Neighborhoods, Same Neighbors advocating for improved habitability, anti-displacement and increased tenant rights.
What's your connection to the Mercado La Paloma? El Mercado La Paloma is an economic development project of Esperanza which we began eight years ago. It is a thriving market and office venue with restaurants and non-profits.
Why did you build the Mercado La Paloma? We built the Mercado La Paloma as an economic development opportunity for first time small business owners.
How does all your work fit together? All of our programs have been designed in response to community needs. The exposure to one program opens up others; people can participate in different programs since the programs support each other. For instance, El Mercado is host to a lot of art work and there’s a permanent health promoter stall.
Can I get housing through Esperanza? At the moment, we have waiting lists available; please contact the resident manager at (213) 741-0581.
Can my kids get involved in the Arts or Science Program? For interested parties please contact a staff member at the office at (213) 748-7285.
Do you work with other nonprofits? Absolutely! The work that Esperanza does is collaborative by nature. We are particularly proud of our long-term strategic relationships as members of the Figueroa Corridor Coalition for Economic Justice, Better Neighborhoods, Same Neighbors, the Healthy Homes Collaborative and the Figueroa Corridor Community Land Trust.
Can I get involved? Yes. We often offer internship opportunities; please call Esperanza for further details at (213) 748-7285. Volunteering opportunities usually come around special events. Also, those who want to be involved but cannot volunteer can donate.
