Open Call to Artists

Freeing Our Selves is the THEME for an upcoming month-long exhibit in celebration of International Women’s Day (IWD).

The roots of International Women’s Day trace back to a mass mobilization in 1908, when 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding the right to vote, better pay and shorter working hours. The first official National Women’s Day march, led by the Socialist Party of America, took place a year later on February 28. In 1913, IWD moved to March 8 and was recognized by the United Nations in 1975.

Esperanza Community Housing invites artists residing in Los Angeles to participate in the upcoming community art exhibition Freeing Our Selves.

Seeking art that engages women’s struggles for emancipation and celebrates their social, political and economic achievements, Freeing Our Selves will exhibit iconic women and women-identifying folks who led or influenced the women’s movement, women-identifying activists who fought anonymously, challenged convention and art that reflects/expresses/meditates on the myriad benefits and costs of fighting for women’s rights.

The exhibit will open in March 8, 2019 and run through March 30th.
