Celebrating 30 Years of Equitable Development: Mercado La Paloma

Nestled in the Mercado La Paloma, Taqueria Vista Hermosa serves up its signature street cart-style al pastor tacos daily to hungry customers. Raul Morales, aka Chef Al Pastor, settled in South Los Angeles 27 years ago with the goal of bringing his cherished Michoacan recipes to the community, and Esperanza Community Housing Corporation gave his cuisine a rightful place in 2001. As Esperanza celebrates 30 years of equitable development, we are proud to provide small business owners a home to thrive in.

Mercado La Paloma is a project of Esperanza Community Housing Corporation.  In 1999 responding to the suggestions of residents in Esperanza’s housing developments for a local version of the bustling markets like those left behind in their home countries, the idea for Mercado La Paloma was born.  Over a five year period of intense community engagement, Esperanza converted a former garment factory into a vibrant community gathering space.  It is an experiment in community revitalization that provides entrepreneurship opportunities for local residents and showcases local creativity to the broader Los Angeles Community.

Build Local Economies: By providing affordable retail opportunities, technical assistance, start-up capital and support, Mercado La Paloma seeks to create business ownership opportunities an living wage jobs in our community.  It is our goal to offer needed goods and services to residents and employees and retain spending in our neighborhood.

Provide Services: Through the non-profit offices located on the second floor, Esperansalud (our public health drop-by center), and our conference room that hosts a wide range of community meetings, events, and classes, Mercado La Paloma seeks to bring a range of community services together under one roof.

Promote Arts and Culture: By hosting art exhibits, music and dance performances, spoken word, film screening and other cultural events Mercado La Paloma seeks to support and showcase local artists, provide high quality art and cultural opportunities for our community and impart the unique cultural heritage of the area’s residents.

Build Community: By creating a warm and welcoming gathering space for a diverse community and open to their ideas and suggestions, we hope to provide opportunities for empowerment, enjoyment and connection – strengthening existing social ties and creating new ones.
