LA City Moves Forward to Phase Out Oil Drilling

Good news! We've cleared the first hurdle toward a citywide phase-out of oil drilling in LA 🎉

Congrats to frontline residents, members and supporters who have taken action with us over the past 10+ years to move us closer to environmental justice.

In a landmark vote, the City Council has cast its first vote to support an ordinance that would end new oil and gas extraction and phase out existing drilling operations within twenty years citywide. For a city long shaped—physically and politically—by fossil fuel interests, this moment represents something far bigger than a policy change.

If the ordinance clears a second Council vote later this summer, Los Angeles will become the largest city in the country to commit to phasing out oil drilling, following the lead of places like Culver City and Santa Barbara. For the residents who have lived with wells in their backyards, schoolyards, and church parking lots for decades, this is a long-awaited step toward achieving environmental justice.

But that doesn't mean our work is over. We have more power to build and more demands to make reality.
